Saudi Arabian authority on Tuesday released a female Nigerian student, Zainab Aliyu, detained over alleged drug trafficking.
According to TVC, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Aliyu was released to the Nigerian mission in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
He further disclosed that other victim, Ibrahim Abubakir, will be released tomorrow.
His release s coming barely few hours after President Muhammadu Buhari directed Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to immediately intervene in the case of Zainab Aliyu, the student incriminated in drug-related matters and being detained by Saudi Arabian authorities.
Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora matters, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, said that the President gave the directive two weeks ago when the matter was brought to his attention.
The Senate on Tuesday also set up a committee to intervene in the matter. In a motion sponsored by Senator Kabir Gaya representing Kano South Senatorial district, he explained that the ordeal of Zainab who is a citizen of Kano State was caused by a notorious cartel within the ranks of Aminu Kano International Airport.
The move by the Nigerian Senate may have however, been overtaken by event.
