The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has warned its Nigerian counterpart sternly, threatening legal action following Nigeria's abrupt withdrawal from their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The decision came after the Super Eagles were stranded at a Libyan airport for over 13 hours, citing safety concerns and inhumane treatment.
In a statement released by the Libya Observer, the LFF condemned Nigeria's refusal to play the match, scheduled for October 15, 2024. They accused the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) of failing to cooperate with the match's organization, despite claiming similar treatment during their visit to Nigeria.
"The Libyan Football Federation condemns the measures taken by the Nigerian Football Federation by refusing to play the Libya-Nigeria match," the statement read. "We will take all legal measures to preserve the interests of the Libyan national football team."
The LFF also criticized Nigeria's withdrawal as a "disgrace" and a "betrayal of the spirit of sportsmanship." They emphasized that the Libyan team had faced similar challenges during their visit to Nigeria, but they had persevered and fulfilled their commitment to play the match.
The Nigerian Football Federation has not yet responded to the LFF's threat of legal action. However, they have previously denied any wrongdoing and blamed the Libyan authorities for the Super Eagles' ordeal.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and controversy in both countries. Football fans and officials have expressed their disappointment and frustration with the way the situation was handled. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is also expected to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
