The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reportedly withdrawn an earlier statement, where it threatened to sanction the internet company, Starlink for increasing its subscription price without the Commission’s approval. This development was reportedly made known by Dr. Reuben Muoka, the Commission’s Director of Public Affairs stating, “Kindly note this press statement was issued in error. It is hereby withdrawn, if published, kindly bring it down.”
The earlier statement allegedly issued by the Commission noted that Starlink did not seek NCC’s approval before increasing its prices in Nigeria.
The statement reads in part, “The decision by Starlink to unilaterally review their subscription packages upwards did not receive the approval of the Nigerian Communications Commission.
“The action of the company appears to be a contravention of Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and Starlink’s License Conditions regarding tariffs.
“The Commission will therefore take appropriate enforcement measures against any action by a licensee that is capable of eroding the regulatory stability of the telecommunications industry."
Recall that last week, Starlink hiked its monthly subscription fee for internet services in Nigeria from N38,000 to N75,000, furthermore, the company also increased its price for Starlink kits (hardware) for new customers from N440,000 to N590,000.
