Nigeria’s Senior Female Football team, the Super Falcons defeated the Lady Elephants of Ivory Coast 1-0 in Abidjan on Wednesday to qualify for this year’s African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) scheduled to hold in Morocco. Nigerian forward, Francisca Ordega thought she had given Nigeria the lead halfway through the first half but the Nigerien referee ruled out the goal.
The Nigerien referee awarded Ivory Coast a penalty in the 34th minute after judging that Ashleigh Plumptre had wrongfully tackled an Ivorian player in the Nigerian area.
However, the Nigerian goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie saved the penalty kick to keep the scoreline 0-0.
Esther Okoronkwo scored in the 88th minute which confirmed a 3-0 aggregate win for the Super Falcons and secured their spot in the upcoming AWCON.
The AWCON tournament is expected to hold in Morocco from 2nd to 23rd July 2022. The 12 teams that have qualified are Morocco (host nation), Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Burundi, Togo, Senegal, Tunisia, Zambia, South Africa, Burkina Faso, and Botswana.
