Farouk Lawan, a Former House of Representatives member who represented the Bagwai/Shanono constituency of Kano state, has been released from Kuje Prison on Tuesday after serving a five-year sentence for bribery.
In 2012, Lawan was the Chairman of the House of Representatives ad hoc committee probing the multi-billion naira petrol subsidy fraud but he was sentenced to prison in 2021 for accepting a $500,000 bribe from Femi Otedola, the then chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited.
The bribe was meant to remove Otedola’s firm from a list of companies implicated in a fuel subsidy fraud.
Video clips had circulated online, showing Lawan collecting and stuffing currency notes underneath his cap and in his traditional outfit.
He was arraigned on seven counts of bribery by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
