A suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, the former commander of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), has been released on bail from the Kuje Custodial Centre, Abuja on Friday, after spending 27 months in detention. According to reports, on May 22, 2024, Justice Emeka Nwite granted Kyari a two-week bail to permit him to participate in the burial rites of his mother, Yachilla Kyari, who passed away on May 5.
As part of his bail conditions, Kyari is expected to deposit his international passport with the court and report to the nearest formation of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), within the period of the bail.
Recall that Kyari was detained after his arrest on February 14, 2022, by the NDLEA for his alleged involvement with an international drug cartel.
On March 7, 2022, Kyari was arraigned alongside with 4 other members of the IRT; Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, John Nuhu and Simon Agirigba but all pleaded not guilty.
2 suspected drug traffickers of the international drug cartel, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, were arrested and charged, both of which pleaded guilty and were convicted.
