Huawei Technologies has committed to bolstering Nigeria’s digital transformation and energy development goals, with its DigiTruck initiative poised to enhance digital literacy nationwide. This commitment was highlighted during a recent visit by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Huawei’s Beijing Research Centre.
During the visit on Tuesday, President Tinubu engaged with Huawei’s leadership, including Mr. Liang Hua, Chairman of the Board of Directors. Liang praised President Tinubu’s recognition of digital technology as a critical driver of economic growth, stating, “Huawei is fully prepared to offer its ICT expertise and become a reliable partner of the Nigerian government to support the country in achieving its policy objectives and advancing its digital, intelligent, and low-carbon development.”
The DigiTruck initiative, a mobile ICT classroom launched by Huawei, will play a significant role in Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy’s 3 Million Technical Talents (3MTT) program. This initiative aims to provide ICT training to underserved communities, reaching 10 Nigerian states annually and training at least 3,000 students each year. The DigiTruck is equipped with computers, internet connectivity, and tailored educational resources designed to meet diverse learning needs.
Chris Lu, CEO of Huawei Nigeria, also expressed strong support for Nigeria’s National Talent Export Programme (NATEP), which seeks to establish Nigeria as a leading talent outsourcing hub in Africa. Lu envisions the development and expansion of Huawei’s Network Operations Center (NOC) to serve African markets better and facilitate the global reach of Nigerian technology talents.
In addition to the DigiTruck initiative, Huawei plans to collaborate with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to establish a joint photovoltaic (PV) test lab. This facility aims to support Nigeria’s digital and low-carbon development goals by advancing solar energy solutions.
The partnership with REA to build a solar PV facility is part of a broader effort to increase clean energy solutions in Nigeria. With Nigeria’s vast solar potential, estimated at approximately 427,000 MW, the country is well-positioned to leverage solar energy for both small businesses and households.
