A ruling has been made by a High Court in Kano State, Nigeria prohibiting Aminu Ado Bayero from presenting himself as the 15th Emir of Kano. The court has also directed the police to remove him from the mini palace at the State Road until June 1st, 2024 when the substantive motion will be heard. In addition to Bayero, the verdict also had an impact on other traditional leaders: Nasiru Ado Bayero, Ibrahim Abubakar II, Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa, and Aliyu Ibrahim Gaya are restrained from parading themselves as emirs of Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye, respectively.
"This court will ensure that its orders are respected and upheld until the substantive motion is heard," Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, who presides over the proceedings, emphasized the value of upholding the law. With many eyes focused on the June 11, 2024 hearing, the legal battles in Kano continue to be fierce.
The defendants in this suit include Ado Bayero, Ibrahim Abubakar II, Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa, Aliyu Ibrahim Gaya, the Inspector General of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigerian Army. The plaintiffs are the Attorney General of Kano State, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly.
Recall that on Thursday, May 23, 2024, a Federal High Court ruled against reinstating Muhammadu Sunusi II as the Emir of Kano. The court also suspended the law establishing the dissolved five emirates in the state.
Despite this ruling, Sanusi II moved into the emir’s palace on Friday and started his duties as the Emir of Kano. Meanwhile, Bayero, who was out of town, returned to find himself deposed. He was then escorted under heavy security to a mini palace on State Road.
