Following the abduction of yet to be identified number of students in a government boarding school in Kankara, Katsina state, former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Buhari to declare a state of emergency on security in the country.
Atiku stated this when the news of the abduction of about 600 students in a boarding school, in Kankara LGA broke out.
The former presidential aspirant in the 2019 general election said that it is now clear that the strategy being deployed by the federal government in tackling insecurity has failed.
The Waziri of Adamawa explained that the abduction of children at the Government Science Technical College Kankara, in Katsina state is a clear escalation of insecurity in the country that is not acceptable.
The former vice president said he condemned the activity of the bandits in totality and sympathized with the parents of the students, the government, and the people of Katsina state for coming under siege and also pray for the safe return of the students.
He called on the security agency in the country to review their tactics and swung immediately into action to ensure those students are safely returned to their parents.
In his statement, “I, therefore, call on the Federal Government to immediately declare a state of emergency in states bedeviled by banditry and terrorism, for an offensive and decisive war on terror and insecurity,”
Atiku continued “For the avoidance of doubt, the emergency I call for should follow the steps prescribed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), and case law, by leaving all democratically elected state and local government structures intact.
“The rationale is quite simple: We cannot win the war on terror by continuing with the same strategies we have deployed over the last five years. That they have not worked is very glaring, with the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara incidence being the latest in a long line of proofs,” he added.
