Smile Mission Health Care (SMHC), an NGO, on Tuesday, said it distributed blankets and other relief items to 2,000 persons displaced by Boko Haram insurgency in Borno.
The Coordinator of the NGO, Dr Abba Saleh, made the disclosure while
distributing the items at the Madinatu Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Maiduguri.
Saleh listed items distributed to include 350 blankets, 2,000 sets of dresses, antiseptic and soaps, as well as shoes.
He said the intervention was to protect the displaced persons against harmattan, cold and malaria, as well as promote hygiene and sanitation in the camp.
He added that the gesture was in collaboration with other organisations such as the Great Borno Renaissance Initiative (GBRI) and Gongoni Nigeria Limited.
He explained that the organisation targeted displaced persons who did not benefit from previous intervention programmes in host communities.
The coordinator called for expansion of Federal Government’s intervention programme to include displaced persons in host communities.
He added that “the humanitarian situation in the northeast is critical, comprehensive and inclusive measures are necessary to address the crisis.
“Thousands of displaced persons from Jere are taking refuge in host communities for over two years without food, education and health interventions.”
Saleh also urged wealthy individuals, corporate bodies and organisations to assist the displaced persons to assuage their sufferings.
Ms Halima Jiddah, one of the beneficiaries, commended the organisation for the gesture, saying it would go a long way to alleviate their sufferings.
