The Federal Government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) has directed all the Vice Chancellors (VCs) in Federal Universities whose tenure will soon end, to nominate their deputies to temporarily serve as acting VCs. This directive was made known in a circular addressed to the affected outgoing VCs and signed by the Executive Secretary of NUC, Chris Maiyaki who stated that this development followed the earlier directive by the Federal Ministry of Education.

The circular reads in part, “I am directed to inform you to kindly disseminate the following information to all the VCs whose tenure will be completed soon. To nominate through the recommendation of the Senate, a Deputy Vice-Chancellor that will oversee the office of the Vice-Chancellor in a temporary capacity.

“The Governing Council after inauguration would appoint an Acting Vice-Chancellor for a period not less than 6 months during which the Council will commence the process of appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor.

“This circular takes pre-eminence over our earlier communication on the same subject. Please, accept the assurances of my warm regards and consideration.”

The NUC is under the Federal Ministry of Education and is saddled with the responsibility of developing and managing university education in Nigeria.
