Thousands of residents have fled their homes following a devastating flood in parts of Maiduguri, Borno state.  The flood led to the collapse of water channels at the Alau Dam on Tuesday.

According to a victim, the floodwaters overflowed the Fori bridge, which connects Fori and Galtimari to Tashan Bama, and swept through homes with incredible force.

One Rafael said, “Everyone should avoid post office, Monday market even the route behind the zoo along Hissan fueling station as the flood has taken over and the road is not motorable.”

“We were alerted to pack our belongings at 12:30 AM, but before we could gather our clothes and school credentials, the water was already waist-deep in our house,’ said a resident of Galtimari.

Other areas badly hit included the GRA, Maiduguri Zoo, College of Nursing, College of Agriculture and School of Health Technology, among others.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for information and internal security, Prof. Usman Tar, has called on the residents in the affected area to stay calm and follow evacuation routes to ensure safety.
