According to reports from Chad, an attack took place on a polling station in the city of Moundou, south of N'Djamena during the presidential election on Monday. Unknown gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old voter who had just cast his ballot. The election was supposed to mark the end of military rule in Chad. The shooter was among a group of people demanding the right to vote in the election.
On Monday, the citizens of Chad participated in an election to decide whether to continue the Deby family's rule, which has lasted for decades in one of the world's poorest nations or to choose Deby's prime minister, Succes Masra. Although, some have criticized Masra as a puppet since there were no other viable contenders.
Before the election, opposition figures were either silenced, forced to flee, or joined forces with Deby's party. Furthermore, the junta prevented any attempts by civil society to campaign against it.
Recall that in 2021, after the death of his father, Idriss Deby Itno, who had been in power for 30 years, General Deby was named the transition leader by other generals. General Deby is also known as "MIDI" or "the Man in Dark Glasses". He initially promised an 18-month transition to democracy, but later extended it by two years.
