Senate Moves To Stop Gender-Base Violence

The Senate has pledged to battle violence against women through the passage of about five bills that are currently before the National Assembly. This is coming following awareness programmes organized by women under the umbrella of vigil society organizations conducted yesterday at the Unity Fountain, Eagle Square, and other parts of Abuja. The Senate Committee Chairman on Women Affairs, Senator Ireti Kingibe, said it is the responsibility of everyone to join hands together and support the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Kingibe, who is also representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the red chamber, said the ugly trend of violence against women must stop.

Judiciary Workers Begin Strike

Judiciary workers in Osun state under the aegis of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), yesterday declared an indefinite strike over issues relating to seizure of wardrope allowance, suspension of their colleagues, and the State Chief Judge’s refusal to lift the embargo on worker’s training. The workers have since on Monday picketed the state High Court in Osogbo to demand justice for what they referred to as persecution and injustice they are facing under the leadership of the state Chief Judge, Justice Adepele Ojo.

EU Allocates €30 Million To Fight Corruption In Nigeria

The European Union has said it had spent a total of 88 million euros to support Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts since 2005, even as it announced another 30 million euros to improve the rule of law, tackle corruption, and reduce gender-based violence in the country for the next five years. The EU Ambassador and Head of Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi, stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at the formal launch of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC Phase II) Programme, implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and funded by the European Union.
