Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States, accepted the Democratic nomination for President on Thursday night, promising to chart a "new way forward" for the country. Addressing a vibrant crowd at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, Harris emphasized her commitment to uniting Americans across political, racial, and social divides.
“On behalf of every American, regardless of party, race, gender, or the language your grandmother speaks… I accept your nomination,” Harris declared, setting the tone for her campaign. She framed the November election as a pivotal moment to move beyond past divisions and focus on collective progress.
In a pointed critique of her rival, former President Donald Trump, Harris accused him of attempting to revert the nation to outdated policies and values. “Donald Trump wants to pull our country back to the past,” she asserted. Harris positioned herself as a champion of the middle class, pledging to fight for economic growth, reduced gun violence, and a reformed immigration system.
She further alleged that the former president prioritizes only a wealthy few. She added that Trump tried to undermine the 2020 election results. "Donald Trump tried to throw away your votes and, when that failed, sent an armed mob to the Capitol,” Harris said.
Her speech also highlighted Trump’s legal troubles, including his conviction on felony counts related to a hush-money case and a jury’s finding of sexual abuse in a civil trial. She emphasized the seriousness of electing Trump for a second term, contrasting her vision of unity with his divisive approach.
Harris vowed to strengthen the middle class by creating job opportunities through partnerships with labor, small businesses, and American companies. She also promised to address the rising costs of healthcare, housing, and groceries, while working towards an “opportunity economy” for all Americans.
On international issues, Harris reaffirmed her support for Israel while calling for an end to the conflict in Gaza. She condemned the violence committed on October 7 and expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “The scale of suffering is heartbreaking,” Harris said. She pledged that her administration would work to secure a ceasefire and address the needs of both Israelis and Palestinians.
Harris concluded her acceptance speech by reiterating her dedication to defending American values and working towards a more inclusive and hopeful future. “The future is always worth fighting for. And that’s the fight we are in right now,” she declared.
